Under the hood of this Chevrolet Equinox is an advanced, fourth-generation hydrogen fuel cell. The fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen to power the car's electric motor. The car can go from 0-60 mph in less than 12 seconds and for a distance of approximately 150-200 miles per fill-up. The Equinox Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) is fun to drive. The only "emission" from the tailpipe is water.
Hydrogen fuel is more energy-efficient, too. A screen on the hydrogen car's dashboard shows how much fuel you save compared to a gasoline-powered Equinox crossover SUV. And it's loaded—with air conditioning, OnStar and more.
When the hydrogen car isn't on the road, it's parked at the Air Products campus in Allentown, Pa., where we also have a hydrogen fueling station.
Inside the fuel cell, the compressed hydrogen is broken into electrons and protons. The electrons provide the energy for the motor. The protons combine with oxygen to form water.
