Air Products Fueling Station

The Air Products Hydrogen Fueling Station in Allentown, PA, represents the latest technology in the supply of hydrogen fuel to automakers worldwide. The technology was developed by the most experienced hydrogen fueling engineers in the industry.

The hydrogen fueling experience is similar to the gasoline fueling experience. In simple terms, here’s how it works:

Liquid hydrogen is produced off-site and delivered by tanker trucks to the fueling station and stored. When fuel is needed, the driver simply connects the hydrogen fuel dispenser nozzle to a mating part on the vehicle and turns a lever. The fuel dispenser is equipped with Air Products’ patented fueling technology that, once activated, allows the dispensing system to electronically initiate and complete a fill safely and efficiently. All the driver has to do is follow a few easy instructions shown on the dispenser’s touch screen.

The liquid hydrogen is pumped through the system, where it is compressed up to 7,000 psi (pounds per square inch) using Air Products’ proprietary and patented hydrogen compression equipment, then it is vaporized for dispensing into the vehicle. This proprietary technology is capable of dispensing up to 10,000 psi. The system automatically detects when the tank is full and lets the driver know when the process is complete. All that is left for the driver to do is detach the nozzle from the vehicle and place it back on the fuel dispenser. The hydrogen fueling process is a clean and closed process, which means the driver is not subjected to vapors while fueling, unlike gasoline fueling, which is an open process.
