What is it?
Hydrogen (H2) is the cleanest burning and most
efficient fuel. It can be produced from natural
gas or water using electricity. Hydrogen produces
water and energy when it’s burned and creates
an energy loop that is renewable and harmless
to the environment.
How is it made?
Today most hydrogen is produced using natural
gas. However there are many other ways to
produce hydrogen e.g. from water, from biomass, or from energy produced from wave, wind or solar generators.
Today, hydrogen is used to fuel lots of vehicles,
such as buses, cars, motorbikes, submarines,
boats and forklift trucks. Hydrogen is even used as a fuel for NASA space shuttles. Most vehicles running on hydrogen operate using a fuel cell.
What is a fuel cell?
A fuel cell is a device that generates electricity
from the chemical reaction between hydrogen
and oxygen, basically a battery that you can
top up with fuel.
Fuel cells help make hydrogen a green fuel
for electric vehicles (when the hydrogen that is
produced is green), in fact when making energy
the only by-product is heat and water.
